Starting Lineup

Víctor Valdés · Dani Alves · Pique · Puyol · Alba · Johan Cruyff · Xavi · Iniesta · Eto'o · Messi · Ronaldinho

Barcelona relies on heavy possession to control the game using a 4-3-3 formation. This lineup works to dominate the ball and force the opposition to chase the play constantly. The goal is to keep the ball in tight spaces and use short passing to move the opponent out of position.

Víctor Valdés plays from goal to play short from the back and start the build up. The defense uses a flat back four where Pique serves as a ball playing defender to progress through the thirds. Puyol is vital to win the header and cover the space if the team plays a high line. Dani Alves acts as an attacking full back to provide width, and Alba also pushes up to overlap the winger and stretch the defence.

The midfield works as a three-man midfield to ensure control over the central area. Xavi plays to recycle possession and switch play to the flanks. Iniesta drives forward with the ball to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Johan Cruyff moves into the half-spaces to combine in tight spaces and find ways to split the defence with a through ball.

The attack uses three players to create constant pressure on the opposition back line. Ronaldinho plays on the left as an inverted winger who cuts inside to use his dribbling. Messi plays on the right to cut inside and use his dribbling and passing range, often pulling wide to create space. Eto'o acts as a pressing centre-forward who stays central to make runs in behind and finish the attacking moves.

A major strength of this Barcelona lineup is the numerical superiority in midfield which allows the players to dominate the ball and recycle possession. The team also creates wide overloads when the full backs push high to support the wingers and pin the last defender. This allows the players to create more passing lanes while they win the ball back high up the pitch to maintain pressure.

This 4-3-3 formation is a possession based system meant to keep the ball and dictate the tempo. It is best suited for matches against teams that sit deep and defend in a low block.
