Johan Cruyff moves into the half-spaces to combine in tight spaces and find ways to split the defence with a through ball.

The attack uses three players to create constant pressure on the opposition back line. Ronaldinho plays on the left as an inverted winger who cuts inside to use his dribbling. Messi plays on the right to cut inside and use his dribbling and passing range, often pulling wide to create space. Eto'o acts as a pressing centre-forward who stays central to make runs in behind and finish the attacking moves.

A major strength of this Barcelona lineup is the numerical superiority in midfield which allows the players to dominate the ball and recycle possession. The team also creates wide overloads when the full backs push high to support the wingers and pin the last defender. This allows the players to create more passing lanes while they win the ball back high up the pitch to maintain pressure.
