Focusing on a direct and hard working style of play, Ulm utilizes a 4-4-2 formation. This lineup is built to be defensively solid while looking to strike quickly on the break. The team relies on maintaining compact lines to make it difficult for opponents to play through the center.

IBARROLA guards the goal and organizes the defensive unit from the back. A flat back four consists of GORNO on the right and FRUTOS on the left, while STIVANELLO and PRADO act as the two central defenders. GORNO and FRUTOS are tasked to push up and overlap to provide width, while STIVANELLO and PRADO must stay disciplined to cover the space behind. The whole defensive unit works to shift together to block passing lanes and protect the central zone.

The midfield operates in two banks of four to control the central areas. RODRIGUEZ and BENITEZ occupy the central roles, acting as the engine to break the line with passes or to intercept play. They must hold their positions to shield the defenders while also being ready to drive forward when the ball moves into the final third. On the flanks, PESOA and TORRES provide the width, tasked to track back and help the full backs when defending, then quickly spread the play when the team wins the ball.

Ulm employs two forwards to lead the line in a high pressing system. GONZALEZ and LEITES act as the striking duo, often working in tandem to harass defenders. One striker might drop slightly deeper to hold up the ball, while the other makes runs into the channels to stretch the opposition. This two man attack is designed to create vertical movements that pull central defenders out of position, creating space for the oncoming midfielders.

This formation offers clear tactical advantages, particularly in its ability to maintain compactness when defending a lead. By keeping the distance between the midfield and the back four small, Ulm can sit deep and deny space. Another strength is the speed of transition, as the direct link between the wide players like PESOA and the two strikers allows for quick attacks before the opponent can reorganize.
