Miguel Angel Abad stays between the posts to manage the defensive line. The back five consists of a central core where C.Gutierrez sits as the main anchor. M. Gning and F.Danese provide the width in the central defense to cover the channels. De Frutos and Fermin act as wing backs, tasked with pushing up the flanks to provide width while making sure they track back to help the defenders. This unit works to keep the lines tight and close together when the ball is on the opposite side.

The midfield operates in a flat four to block passing lanes. Hugo Matos and Néstor occupy the central roles, working to intercept passes and win second balls in front of the defense. Marcos S and Berto provide the width in the midfield, acting as wide midfielders who can tuck inside to help the central pair or push out to defend the flanks. This midfield group connects the defensive block to the lone striker, ensuring the team can move the ball forward quickly once possession is regained.

Real Unión relies on a lone striker, Jony, to lead the line. Because the team plays with many players behind the ball, Jony must hold up the ball to allow the midfield to move up the pitch. The attack is built through long balls or quick passes into the channels for the wing backs to join. Marcos S and Berto often push higher to support the front line, creating a sense of width that forces the opposition to stretch their defensive block.

The main advantage of this formation is the extreme compactness when defending a low block. By having five defenders and a bank of four midfielders, the team makes it very hard for opponents to play through the middle. Another strength is the ability to use wide overloads when De Frutos and Fermin overlap with the wide midfielders.
