Lens Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Chávez · Gradit · Baidoo · Aguilar · Sangaré · Nwaiwu · Thauvin · Edouard · Thomasson · Sima · RisserLens focuses on a high press and rapid vertical transitions through a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup seeks to dominate the middle of the pitch and overwhelm the opposition through intense pressing and quick ball movement. The goal is to recover the ball high up the field and immediately look to break the line with direct passes to the front three.
Risser sits between the two central defenders to organize the back line. Gradit and Baidoo form a narrow pair of center backs who must step up to intercept passes and handle long balls. This two man defense relies on the heavy work of the midfield to provide cover when the team pushes high. The two center backs focus on staying tight to each other to prevent runners from getting behind the defense.
The midfield functions as a dense engine room to control the game. Aguilar and Chávez act as a double pivot to shield the defense and win second balls. Nwaiwu and Sangaré operate in the central areas to drive forward and connect the defense to the attack. Thomasson plays as the attacking ten, finding pockets of space between the lines to create chances. This heavy midfield presence allows Lens to win possession and dictate the tempo of the match.
In the final third, the attack uses three dedicated players to stretch the opposition. Sima and Thauvin act as wide attackers, with Sima cutting inside from the left and Thauvin looking to cross or drive from the right. Edouard operates as the lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and make runs into the channels. The front three press the opponent deep, forcing mistakes that the midfield can quickly exploit.
This formation offers significant numerical superiority in the center of the pitch. The ability to press high in coordinated waves makes it very difficult for opponents to build play from the back. By having five midfielders, the team can create wide overloads when the wingers move inside, leaving space for the midfield to shift and occupy wide areas.
The 2-5-3 formation is built for aggressive, attacking football. It is best suited for games where the team wants to dominate possession and suffocate the opponent in their own half.
