Barcelona Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Raphinha · Olmo · Yamal · Gavi · Pedri · de Jong · Martín · Bastoni · Araújo · Koundé · ter StegenBarcelona looks to control the ball through heavy possession and high pressing in a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to dominate the ball in the middle of the pitch while maintaining enough bodies back to stop any quick breaks. The goal is to squeeze the opponent into their own half and use wide areas to stretch the defensive line.
Ter Stegen acts as the goalkeeper and can play a high line to sweep up long balls. The back line uses a three man central unit consisting of de Jong, Bastoni, and Araújo. Bastoni and Araújo provide aerial strength and physical presence to block crosses, while de Jong steps up to help pass the ball out from the back. Koundé operates as the right wing back, pushing high to overlap and provide width, while Martín covers the left flank as the left wing back. This defensive unit works to keep the team compact and can drop into a deep block if the press is bypassed.
In the center of the pitch, Barcelona uses a two man midfield to connect the play. Gavi and Pedri occupy the central roles to control the tempo of the game. Gavi uses his intense pressing to win the ball back quickly, while Pedri uses his passing range to break the lines and find the attackers. They must work hard to cover the spaces left behind when the wing backs push forward to ensure the midfield does not get overrun.
The attack features three players positioned high to pressure the opposition. Raphinha leads the line as a lone striker, using his work rate to press the defenders and hold up the ball. On the flanks, Yamal cuts inside from the right to create goal threats, while Olmo operates on the left to link the midfield and the attack. These three attackers move in relation to each other to create pockets of space in the final third.
This formation offers specific tactical advantages such as numerical superiority in the wide areas when Koundé and Martín push forward. The team can also use coordinated waves of pressing from Raphinha, Yamal, and Olmo to force turnovers high up the pitch. Having three central defenders also makes the team very difficult to break down through the middle during transitions.
The 5-2-3 formation provides Barcelona with a strong balance between defensive stability and attacking width. It is best suited for games where the team wants to dominate possession and control the rhythm against opponents that rely on counter attacking.
