Starting Lineup

M. Sarr · Baidoo · Aguilar · Udol · Sangaré · Haidara · Edouard · Thomasson · Thauvin · Saint-Maximin · Risser

A heavy focus on overwhelming the opponent through central and wide pressure defines this Lens lineup in a 2-5-3. This formation seeks to control the middle of the pitch and pin the opposition back with a high volume of players in the attacking half. By committing so many bodies forward, Lens intends to dominate territory and force errors through relentless pressure.

Risser sits between the posts to organize the defense from the back. Behind the midfield block, Baidoo and M. Sarr operate as a narrow pair of central defenders. These two must be ready to step up to intercept long balls or drop back to cover space behind the high line. Because there are only two players in the deepest line, Baidoo and M. Sarr must communicate constantly to manage the gaps left by the advancing midfielders.

The midfield operates as a five man unit that dominates the center of the field. Udol and Aguilar act as a double pivot to shield the two defenders, providing a base to recycle possession. Sangaré and Haidara play as more advanced central midfielders to drive the ball forward and break the lines with their passing. Thomasson sits ahead of them as an attacking ten, looking to find pockets of space between the opponent midfield and defense to create chances.

In the attacking third, three players lead the way to stretch the opposition. Edouard acts as the lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and provide a focal point for the team. On the flanks, Saint-Maximin and Thauvin operate as wide attackers. Saint-Maximin uses his dribbling to cut inside from the left, while Thauvin looks to provide width or cross from the right. Their movements force the opposition defense to stay wide, opening space in the middle for the attacking midfielders.

The main advantage of this formation is the ability to create numerical superiority in the central areas. With Thomasson, Sangaré, and Haidara all pushing high, the team can easily overwhelm a standard midfield. Another strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the front three and the attacking midfielders to trap the opponent in their own half. This makes it very difficult for opponents to build play from the back.

This high risk high reward formation relies on winning the ball back quickly in the opposition half. It is best suited for games where Lens wants to dominate a weaker side through sheer numbers and intensity.
