Lens Football Formation
Starting Lineup
M. Sarr · Baidoo · Aguilar · Udol · Sangaré · Haidara · Edouard · Thomasson · Thauvin · Saint-Maximin · RisserLens utilizes a 2-5-3 formation that focuses on a high press and rapid verticality. This lineup is built to control the middle of the pitch and flood the attacking zones to overwhelm the opposition. The team looks to win the ball high up the pitch to create immediate scoring chances through quick transitions.
Risser acts as the lone man between the posts to sweep up any long balls that bypass the high line. In front of him, M. Sarr and Baidoo operate as a pair of central defenders who must be ready to step up and intercept passes. Because this formation lacks traditional full backs, these two central defenders carry a heavy burden to cover wide areas and track runners when the ball shifts.
The midfield is a dense block designed to dominate the center. Udol and Aguilar form a double pivot to shield the two central defenders and break up play. Sangaré and Haidara occupy the central lanes to drive the ball forward and connect the defense to the attack. Thomasson operates as an attacking ten, looking to find pockets of space between the lines to create chances for the forwards.
Lens employs three attackers to stretch the opposition defense. Edouard plays as the lone striker to hold up the ball and pin the center backs. Saint-Maximin and Thauvin act as wide wingers, with Saint-Maximin using his dribbling style to beat defenders on the flank and Thauvin looking to cut inside and deliver crosses. These three forwards press the opposing back line intensely to force mistakes.
One major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in the middle of the park. By having five players in the midfield, Lens can easily control the tempo and intercept passes. The team also benefits from the ability to isolate Saint-Maximin and Thauvin in one on one situations against full backs. This creates constant pressure on the wide areas of the opponent.
This 2-5-3 formation relies on a heavy midfield presence and high intensity to dictate play. It is best suited for games where the team wants to dominate possession and crush an opponent that sits deep.
