Bedoya and Burdisso operate as the central defensive pair, where Burdisso uses his aerial strength to defend set pieces and Bedoya covers the space behind the advancing full backs. The defensive unit stays compact to prevent through balls and force the opposition wide.

In the middle of the park, the midfield relies on a single pivot system to connect the defense to the attack. Castro acts as the anchor to shield the back four and intercept passes. Morocho and Valverde occupy the central roles, with Valverde looking to drive forward and Morocho working to break the line with vertical passes.
