Columbus uses a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to play a defensive style that focuses on sitting deep and absorbing pressure. The team looks to remain compact and compact, waiting for the right moment to hit opponents on the break. Wessam guards the goal as the last line of defense. In front of him, the back five consists of Diego, André, and Dylan in the center. They act as the link between the back five and the rest of the team. On the edges, Hugo and Andrés provide width in the middle third. These players must work hard to track back and mark the opposing wingers while also looking to switch play when they regain possession.

Columbus relies on a lone striker, Patrick, to lead the line. Because the midfield and defense are so deep, Patrick must hold up the ball and wait for support. He is responsible for pressing the opposition defenders to disrupt their buildup. The attack is built through long passes or quick transitions where Hugo or Andrés might push forward to support him in the final third.

By having five defenders and four midfielders, it is very difficult for opponents to find gaps between the lines. The team can also use the speed of transition to catch opponents out of position.
