A double pivot makes up the midfield. Pedri and de Jong hold the central zone. Pedri uses his passing range to break the line of the first press and find the forwards. de Jong uses his dribbling to drive forward and carry the ball into the attacking third. They link the defense to the attack by finding ways to pass through the middle or switch play to the wings. They must also track back to help the back four when possession is lost.

The attacking unit consists of four players. Lewandowski and Fermín work as the central duo. Lewandowski uses his movement and aerial strength to hold up the ball and finish chances. Raphinha plays on the left wing and uses his pressing intensity to harass defenders. Bardghji operates on the right flank to provide width. Raphinha and Bardghji can cut inside to create central presence, allowing the full backs to overlap and cross the ball into the box.

One main advantage for Barcelona is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. The four attackers make it very difficult for the opponent to pass out from the back. Another strength is the speed of transition. When de Jong or Pedri intercept a pass, the ball can move quickly to the wide players. This creates chances to isolate wide players in one on one situations.
