Starting Lineup

Barcelona uses a 2-5-3 formation to play a very high, aggressive style of football. This formation is built to control the ball and press the opponent deep in their own half. By pushing players forward, Barcelona aims to pin the opposition back and create constant pressure in the final third.

J. Garcia sits behind a back two consisting of Cubarsi and G. Martin. Because this system uses only two central defenders, they must play a high line to compress the pitch. Cubarsi acts as a ball playing defender to start attacks from the back, while G. Martin provides cover and strength in the air. Since there are no traditional full backs, the wide midfielders must drop back to help cover the flanks when the ball is lost.

The midfield unit is the engine of this lineup, operating as a five man block. Koundé and Balde act as the two holding players to shield the defense and provide a base for the build up. Gavi sits in the middle to drive the ball forward with his intense pressing and work rate. Pedri and Olmo operate in the half spaces as the creative creators, looking to break the line with a pass or a dribble to connect the midfield to the attack.

In the attacking third, the team utilizes three forwards to stretch the defense. Lewandowski leads the line as a lone striker, using his positioning to hold up the ball and bring others into play. Fermin and Raphinha operate as wide attackers, with Raphinha often looking to cut inside and Fermin making runs into the box. This front line is designed to press the opposition defenders immediately to force turnovers.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it very difficult for opponents to play out from the back. The presence of Pedri and Olmo in the pockets creates numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. This allows the team to dominate possession and isolate opponents in one on one situations against the wingers.
