Starting Lineup

Lens plays a 5-4-1 formation that focuses on being defensively solid and relying on quick transitions. This lineup is built to sit deep and force the opposition into making mistakes before launching direct attacks. The team looks to congest the central areas and deny space to the opponent, making them hard to break down.

Risser acts as the last line of defense in goal. The defensive unit operates with a back three consisting of Thomasson, M. Sarr, and M. Sangare. Thomasson and M. Sangare provide cover and aerial strength in the middle, while M. Sarr holds the line. On the flanks, Ganiou and Baidoo play as wing backs to provide width. Ganiou and Baidoo must track back to help the central defenders and also push up to support the midfield when the team has the ball.

The midfield acts as a flat four to shield the back line. Said and Thauvin sit in the central roles to control the tempo and break the line with passes. Said works to intercept balls in the middle, while Thauvin can drive forward to connect the defense to the attack. On the wings, Udol and Abdulhamid provide width and help the wing backs. Udol and Abdulhamid must drop deep to help the defense and also push up to support the lone striker.

Lens uses a lone striker in Edouard to lead the line. Edouard is tasked to hold up the ball and wait for support from the midfield. Because the formation relies on a single forward, the attack is built through long passes or quick transitions from the midfield. Udol and Abdulhamid look to provide crosses into the box, while the central midfielders look to find Edouard in tight spaces. The forwards and midfielders must press together to prevent the opponent from building play easily.

This formation offers several tactical advantages, such as extreme compactness when defending in a low block. The five defenders and four midfielders make it very difficult for opponents to find gaps between the lines. Lens also benefits from the ability to use the wing backs to create wide overloads once they transition into an attacking phase. The speed of transition allows the team to catch the opposition off guard.

The 5-4-1 formation provides a very disciplined defensive block that is difficult to penetrate. This lineup is best suited for games against teams that dominate possession and require a counter attacking response.
