Starting Lineup

Areola · Varane · Kondogbia · Rigobert Song · Ekotto · Remmy · Diouf · Thauvin · Taraabt/Smicer · StMaximin · Tisserand

Focusing on direct play and high intensity, Lens employs a 2-4-4 formation to overwhelm opponents. This lineup aims to commit many bodies forward to break lines quickly and exploit space in the final third. The goal is to use verticality to move from defense to attack with minimal passing in the middle third.

Areola guards the goal, acting as the last line of defense. The back line consists of only two central defenders, Tisserand and Varane, who must maintain a high line to keep the team compact. Varane uses his aerial strength and positioning to intercept long balls, while Tisserand covers the space behind him. Because there are no traditional full backs, these two must be ready to step up and engage attackers early to prevent them from turning.

The midfield functions as a central block designed to control the tempo and protect the two defenders. Kondogbia sits deep to shield the back line, acting as a pivot to win the ball and distribute it quickly. To his sides, Rigobert Song and Ekotto occupy the central spaces, working to press opponents and drive the ball forward. Taraabt/Smicer operates as an attacking ten, playing between the lines to find pockets of space and provide the final pass to the front four.

The attacking unit is heavy and designed to pin the opposition defense back. Diouf and Thauvin provide width from the left and right, looking to cut inside or deliver crosses into the box. In the center, StMaximin and Remmy work as a dual strike force. StMaximin uses his dribbling style to beat men in one on one situations, while Remmy works to hold up the ball and allow others to join the attack. This group presses high to force turnovers near the opponent goal.

Lens can create significant tactical advantages through this aggressive setup. The presence of four attackers often creates numerical superiority in the final third, making it hard for a standard back four to track every run. The team can also use the midfield to create overloads, especially when Taraabt/Smicer pushes higher to support the strikers. This setup allows for rapid transitions where the ball moves from Kondogbia to the wide players in seconds.

This formation relies on aggressive pressing and high risk taking to dominate the game. It is best suited for matches where Lens needs to break down a low block or chase a result through sheer attacking volume.
