Lens relies on a direct style of play using a 4-4-2 formation. The team looks to win the second ball and move the ball quickly through the thirds to catch opponents off guard. This lineup is built to play a vertical game that relies on pressing and quick transitions to exploit gaps in the opposition.

ALBERT stays between the posts to organize the defense. A flat back four forms the foundation of the Lens lineup. CECH operates as the left back to cover the wide area while AZIZ plays as the right back. In the middle of the defense, CASTEL and MOREAU work together to defend zonally. CASTEL and MOREAU must hold the line and step up to set the offside trap while ensuring they do not leave space behind for runners. CECH and AZIZ look to support the midfield when needed but must track back to prevent counter attacks.

The midfield works to control the center of the pitch. GAUDIN sits in front of the defense as a single pivot to shield the back four and intercept passes. NSIAH and WADE operate as the central midfielders, with NSIAH looking to carry the ball forward and WADE looking to connect the defensive and attacking lines. DIALLO plays in the hole as an attacking ten to support the front two. This allows the team to build play through the middle and find the feet of the strikers in tight spaces.

Up front, the team uses two forwards in a partnership. COMBES and BAKKER lead the line, often working together to press the opposition back line from the front. These two forwards aim to find space between the defenders to receive on the turn. DIALLO looks to play through the lines to feed them, while COMBES and BAKKER try to run in behind or hold up the ball to let others arrive late into the box. The wide players aim to spread wide to stretch the defence.

This 4-4-2 offers great compactness when defending in a mid block. The team can press in pairs to win the ball back high up the pitch. Another strength is the speed of transition, as the team can break quickly once the ball is won. The presence of DIALLO allows for quick combinations to bypass the midfield.

The Lens formation is built on a strong defensive block and rapid counter attacks. It is best suited for matches against teams that play a high line and leave space behind their defenders.
