Iraq National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
gk (dd) · lb · cb · cb · lb · cm · cm · lm · lm · st · camIraq aims to play a hard to beat brand of football through a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup focuses on defensive solidity and quick transitions to catch opponents out of position. The team works to keep a compact unit that is difficult to break down through the middle, relying on a disciplined block to frustrate more expansive sides.
The goalkeeper acts as the last line of defense behind a flat back four. The wide defenders, the RB and LB, focus on tracking opposing wingers and preventing crosses into the box. In the center, the RCB and LCB form a central pair tasked with winning headers and clearing the lines when under pressure. This defensive unit stays connected to ensure they do not leave gaps between the lines, often dropping into a low block to deny space behind them.
In the middle of the pitch, Iraq utilizes a five man midfield to control the tempo and congest the central areas. The two holding players, the LDM and RDM, shield the defense and try to intercept passes before they reach the final third. Moving slightly higher, the LCM and RCM act as links between the defense and the attack, with the ability to carry the ball forward into the half spaces. The CAM operates in the hole to find pockets of space and connect with the lone striker. This midfield unit is designed to squeeze the space and win the second ball in the center of the park.
The attack relies on a lone ST who must work hard to hold up the ball and pressure the opposition back line. Because the ST is isolated, the LM and RCM must provide support to prevent the striker from being marked out of the game. The team looks to use the width of the pitch to stretch the defense, often looking to hit in behind on the transition. When Iraq wins the ball, they look to move it quickly to the ST or the CAM to initiate rapid attacks in transition.
One major advantage of this formation is the ability to create numerical superiority in the midfield. By packing the center, Iraq can easily win the battle for possession in the middle third and force opponents to play wide. Another strength is the compactness when defending, which makes it very difficult for the opposition to play through the lines. This setup allows the team to sit deep and wait for the right moment to counter at pace.
Iraq uses this 4-5-1 to stay compact and frustrate dominant teams. It is a formation best suited for matches where the team needs to absorb pressure and strike on the break.
