MAUREL (61) · HORVAT (64) · PETKOVIC (66) · AL MUTADEE (65) · SALEH (66) · CARIDES (64) · LENOIR (67) · BOKSIC (66) · BOSNJAK (64) · MORAND (63) · YERNAZAROV (57)A direct and hardworking identity defines the team, which utilizes a 4-4-2 formation. Lens wants to play with a high press and use a compact block to win the ball back quickly. This formation is built to play a vertical style of football where the goal is to transition fast from defense to attack.
MAUREL acts as the goalkeeper to organize the back line. The defense uses a flat back four that works well in a mid-block. SALEH and HORVAT play as the right and left backs, and they must track back to cover the wide areas. PETKOVIC and AL MUTADEE act as the two central defenders, with PETKOVIC often tasked to win the header and AL MUTADEE to cover the space behind the line. The defensive unit works to maintain a tight line and squeeze the space between the players.
The midfield is built around a double pivot. LENOIR and BOKSIC sit in the center to protect the defense and win the second ball. LENOIR works to shield the center, while BOKSIC looks to carry the ball forward and link with the attackers. On either side, CARIDES and BOSNJAK provide the width needed to stretch the defense. CARIDES operates on the left and BOSNJAK on the right, helping to recycle possession and switch play when the middle is too crowded.
The attack features two forwards in a partnership. MORAND and YERNAZAROV lead the line to pressure the opposition back line. MORAND can hold up the ball to wait for support, while YERNAZAROV looks to make runs in behind the defenders. The team builds attacks by using the width from CARIDES and BOSNJAK to provide crosses. This allows the forwards to attack the near post or attack the far post through combinations in the box.
This formation offers several tactical advantages. It provides numerical superiority in the central area when the four midfielders work close together. The team also finds success through wide overloads when SALEH and BOSNJAK push up the pitch. Additionally, the speed of transition allows the players to hit the opposition in behind before they can set their defense.
The 4-4-2 formation provides a disciplined way for the team to maintain a compact formation. It is best suited for facing teams that play with high possession where Lens can defend deep and counter at pace.
