Australia National Soccer Team Formation
Starting Lineup
Beach · Circati · Souttar © · Burgess · Bos · Italiano · O'Neill · Okon-Engstler · Metcalfe · Irakunda · TouréAustralia looks to stay hard to beat while waiting for the right moment to strike. This team utilizes a 5-2-3 formation to maintain a heavy defensive presence. The main goal is to win the ball deep and move the play forward with speed.
Beach is responsible for guarding the goal. The defensive unit works as a five man line with Bos playing as the left wing back and Italiano as the right wing back. In the middle, Burgess and Circati act as the wide centre backs to cover the flanks. Souttar, the captain, sits in the centre of the defence to act as the leader. Souttar uses his aerial strength to win the header and clear the lines during set pieces. The whole unit can drop into a low block to deny the turn of any attacking midfielder.
A double pivot of O'Neill and Okon-Engstler controls the middle of the pitch. These two must work hard to protect the back five and cover the space between the lines. O'Neill often stays deeper to shield the defence and recycle possession. Okon-Engstler is tasked to carry the ball forward to link the defensive unit with the attackers. They must be ready to press in a mid-block to force a long ball from the opposition.
The attacking unit consists of three players working to stretch the defence. Irakunda and Metcalfe operate as wide wingers who can cut inside to create chances. Touré leads the line as a lone striker to hold up the ball and provide a focal point. The team looks to break quickly when they win the ball back. The wing backs will push up to overlap the winger and whip it in toward the box. This formation creates plenty of opportunities to hit in behind on the transition.
One major advantage of this lineup is the extreme compactness when defending deep. The three central defenders make it very hard for opponents to find space in the box. Another strength is the ability to create wide overloads when Bos and Italiano push high. This allows Australia to switch play and isolate wide players in one on one situations.
This 5-2-3 formation provides a reliable way to stay solid and defend against heavy pressure. It is a lineup best used when playing against teams that want to control possession.
