Barcelona plays a high intensity and vertical style of football using a 4-2-4 formation. De Jong uses his ability to carry the ball forward to bridge the lines, while Pedri uses his passing range to find teammates in tight spaces. This pair must work to protect the center, with one player often dropping deeper to cover the space left by advancing full backs. They act as the engine to recycle possession and trigger the next phase of the attack.

The attacking unit is extremely aggressive, featuring four players across the front. Lamine Yamal and Raphinha operate as wide wingers, with Lamine Yamal often cutting inside from the right to create goal scoring chances. Raphinha provides width on the left and uses his pressing intensity to win the ball back high up the pitch. In the center, Fermín and Julián Álvarez act as the two central forwards. They work in combinations to pin the opposition defenders, with one often making runs in behind to exploit gaps while the other tries to hold up the ball for the wide players.

This 4-2-4 formation offers Barcelona significant advantages in the attacking third. The primary strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the four forwards to force a long ball from the opposition. Another advantage is the threat of wide overloads when Balde or Koundé overlap the wingers. Additionally, the team can isolate wide players in one on one situations, particularly with Lamine Yamal, to break the opposition line.

This formation is a high risk, high reward system designed to dominate the ball and pin the opponent in their own half. It is best suited for games where Barcelona needs to break down a deep low block through sheer offensive volume.
