Starting Lineup

Gordon · Yamal · de Jong · F. López · Pedri · Raphinha · Cancelo · Koundé · Christensen · Araújo · García

Barcelona focuses on high pressing and quick transitions within a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup aims to win the ball high up the pitch and use wide players to stretch the defence. The goal is to dominate territory by using aggressive movement to force turnovers in the final third.

García starts in goal to organize the back five. The defensive unit uses a back three with de Jong, Christensen, and Araújo. Christensen and Araújo act as central defenders, with Araújo using his strength to win the header and Christensen covering space. Koundé plays as a right wing back to manage the flank, while Cancelo acts as a left wing back to push high and provide width. This combination allows the team to stay compact when defending in a mid-block and switch to a wide defensive block when necessary.

The midfield relies on a two-man central pairing to connect the defence and attack. Pedri operates as a playmaker with a great passing range to find teammates in tight spaces. F. López provides energy to press in a mid-block and helps to recycle possession. These two players must work hard to cover the ground between the defensive line and the front three, ensuring they do not get bypassed during transition.

In the attacking phase, Barcelona utilizes three attackers across the front. Raphinha acts as a pressing centre-forward to disrupt the opposition build up. Yamal plays as an inverted winger on the right to cut inside and create chances, while Gordon stays wide on the left to stretch the play. The front three look to make runs in behind the opposition defence or combine in tight spaces to split the defence with a through ball.

One major advantage for Barcelona is the ability to create wide overloads from the wing backs. When Cancelo and Koundé push up, they create numerical superiority against the opponent wide defenders. The team also benefits from the ability to press high in coordinated waves, with the front three and the midfield duo triggering a press together. This makes it very difficult for opponents to play out from the back comfortably.

This 5-2-3 formation provides a strong balance between defensive solidity and attacking width. It is a lineup best suited for games where the team needs to exploit space on the flanks against a compact opponent.
