Racing seeks to play a very compact and reactive game through a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup focuses on defensive solidity and being hard to break down by sitting deep. The goal is to absorb pressure and then transition quickly to catch the opposition off guard. This type of football is built to frustrate high possession teams and rely on the directness of a lone striker.

Arana/Villalibre starts between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line consists of three central defenders with Iñigo/Aldasoro, Maguette/Sergio, and Canales/Yeray acting as the core. These players focus on winning the header and defending zonally to protect the middle. On the flanks, Vicente/Suli and Andrés/Guli/Diego Díaz operate as attacking wing backs. They must track back to help the central defenders when out of possession but also push high to provide width when the team wins the ball.

The midfield is arranged in a flat four to cover the width of the pitch. Manu/LCM and Facu act as the central pair to protect the space in front of the back three. Manu and Facu work to win the second ball and recycle possession to the wide players. Mantilla and Mario occupy the wide areas as RM and LM. They are tasked to track back and support the wing backs while also being ready to carry the ball forward to start a break. This midfield unit works to squeeze the space between the lines and deny the opposition time on the ball.

Racing uses Eriksson as a lone striker to lead the line. Eriksson must hold up the ball to allow the midfielders to move up the pitch. The attacking intent relies on the wing backs, Vicente/Suli and Andrés/Guli/Diego Díaz, to provide service from wide areas. The team looks to hit in behind on the transition by using the pace of the wide players and the movement of Eriksson. This setup creates a target for long balls and looks to isolate defenders in one on one situations when the team breaks quickly.

This formation offers significant compactness when defending a lead or facing a heavy attack. The numerical superiority in the defensive third makes it very difficult for opponents to find gaps. Racing also benefits from the speed of transition when the midfield wins the ball and immediately looks to find the wide players. The ability to shift between a back five and a back three during the attacking phase gives the team tactical flexibility.

The 5-4-1 lineup is a defensive tool designed to absorb pressure and strike on the break. It is best suited for games against teams that dominate possession and leave space behind their high defensive line.
