Starting Lineup

Lens plays with an aggressive intent to overwhelm the opponent, utilizing a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup is built to play a high press and a very direct style of football. The goal is to win the ball high up the pitch and move quickly toward the goal to catch the opposition out.

Gorgelin stays in goal to command the area and organize the players. The defense sits in a flat back four. Udol plays at left back and Abdulhamid plays at right back. Both full backs are expected to push up when the team has possession. In the center, Antonio and Ganiou form the defensive pairing. Antonio acts as a covering defender to sweep behind the line, while Ganiou is used to win the header and keep the line solid. The unit tries to hold a high line to squeeze the space.

The midfield operates as a double pivot. Bulatovic and Cuissance play in the center to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Bulatovic focuses on his role to shield the defense and intercept passes. Cuissance is tasked to carry the ball forward and drive into the half spaces. They must work hard to cover the large spaces left by the four attackers. They are the ones who recycle possession and look to play through the lines when the opposition sits deep.

The attack is heavy with four players across the front. Thauvin and Hazard work as wide wingers. Thauvin likes to cut inside to create chances in the pockets, while Hazard stretches the defense by staying wide. Sima and Edouard form a striking partnership. Edouard is able to hold up the ball to find the feet of the striker in tight spaces, while Sima looks to make runs in behind. This creates many chances to hit in behind on the transition.

A major strength for Lens is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. With four players near the opponent, they can win it back high up the pitch and force a long ball. The formation also allows for incredible speed of transition. Once the midfield wins the ball, the players can spread wide to stretch the defense and attack quickly.

This 4-2-4 formation is designed for heavy attacking and high intensity. It is best suited for matches where Lens needs to break down a low block or when they face teams that struggle to play out from the back.
