Because there are no traditional full backs, these two must be ready to defend wide areas when the team loses possession.

The midfield is the engine room of this formation, utilizing a five man unit to control the game. Bernal and Pedri operate in the central zones to recycle possession and move the ball through the lines. Pedri uses his exceptional passing range to find teammates in tight spaces, while Bernal works to protect the two central defenders. Olmo plays as an attacking ten, operating in the hole to connect the midfield to the front three. On the flanks, Eric and Balde act as wide midfielders to provide width and help the team win the ball back high up the pitch.

The attacking unit consists of three players across the front. Raphinha leads the line as a pressing centre-forward, working to force long balls from the opposition. Yamal and Gordon occupy the wide areas as wingers to stretch the defence. Yamal likes to cut inside to create chances, while Gordon provides a threat from the left. This front three works to pin the last defender and create room for Olmo to arrive late into the box.

A major strength of this 2-5-3 is the numerical superiority in midfield, which makes it very hard for opponents to play through the center. The wide midfielders, Eric and Balde, allow the team to create overloads on the flanks when they have the ball. Additionally, the coordination between the high line and the five man midfield allows the team to trigger a press effectively to win the ball back in dangerous areas.
