Barcelona looks to dominate through high possession and heavy pressure in a 2-5-3. The team wants to control the ball and squeeze the pitch to force errors high up the field. This formation builds a heavy presence in the middle of the pitch to allow the front three to stay close to the opposition goal.

Joan García plays between the posts as the goalkeeper to start the build up. Behind the midfield, Gerard Martín and Curbasi form a narrow back two that must be brave when playing out from the back. These two central defenders act as the base for the entire team, often having to cover large amounts of space when the team pushes up. They must be ready to win the second ball or intercept long balls sent behind them.

The midfield layer is very dense to ensure the team can recycle possession easily. De Jong and Pedri operate in the central area to connect the defense to the attack, with De Jong often carrying the ball forward through the lines. Pedri uses his passing range to find teammates in tight spaces. Olmo plays as the attacking ten behind the striker to find pockets of space between the lines. On the flanks, Eric and Balde act as wide midfielders to provide width and support the press. Eric and Balde must work hard to track back when the team loses the ball to prevent being caught out on the break.

In the final third, Barcelona uses three attackers to pin the last defender. Raphinha leads the line as a pressing centre-forward to disrupt the build up. Yamal plays on the right as an inverted winger to cut inside and create chances, while Gordon stays wide on the left to stretch the defense. This front three works together to create runs in behind and exploit the gaps left by a retreating defense. The goal is to use quick combinations to split the defense with a through ball.

One major advantage for Barcelona is the numerical superiority in midfield, which makes it hard for opponents to win the ball. The presence of Eric and Balde allows for wide overloads that can pull defenders out of position. The team can also press in coordinated waves to win it back high up the pitch.

This 2-5-3 formation is designed for total control and aggressive attacking. It is best suited for games where Barcelona can pin the opponent into their own half and dominate territory.
