Barcelona aims to control games through high possession and intense pressing in a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to dominate the middle of the pitch and squeeze the space available to the opponent. By pushing so many players forward, the team forces the opposition to stay deep and defend a massive amount of territory.

Joan García sits between the posts to act as the first point of distribution. The defensive unit relies on a back two consisting of Gerard Martín and Curbasi. These central defenders must play a very high line to keep the team compact. Because there are only two in the central zone, they need to be prepared to step up and intercept long balls or cover the space behind when the team wins the ball back high up the pitch.

A five man midfield unit provides the engine for Barcelona. Pedri and De Jong form a central pairing that connects the defence to the attack. Pedri uses his exceptional passing range to move the ball through the lines, while De Jong carries the ball forward to drive the team into the final third. Fermín plays as an attacking ten to press aggressively and win the ball high up the pitch. On the flanks, Balde and Koundé operate as wide players to provide width. Balde pushes up to support the left side, while Koundé manages the right side to ensure the midfield remains wide enough to stretch the defence.

The attacking front three functions with high intensity to pin the last defender. Raphinha operates on the left as an inverted winger who cuts inside to create goalscoring chances. On the opposite flank, Gordon stays wide to pull the opposition defenders apart. Yamal plays as a striker in this system, often dropping into the spaces between the lines to link up play. This front line is designed to press from the front and force a long ball from the opposition.

One major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in midfield which allows Barcelona to recycle possession easily. The team can also create wide overloads by using the combination of the wide midfielders and the wingers. This setup allows for a very quick transition if the ball is won in the middle of the park.

This formation relies on extreme bravery to play with such a thin defensive line. It is most effective against teams that struggle to play through a high press and cannot exploit the space behind the defenders.
