Starting Lineup

Barcelona seeks to control the tempo and dominate the ball using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup relies on heavy ball retention and extreme width to stretch the opposition. Joan García stays behind a very high defensive line to act as a sweeper when the team pushes up. They act as ball playing defenders who need to step up to intercept long balls. Because there are only two central defenders, they rely on the midfield to prevent direct runs through the center.

The midfield functions as a massive engine room to control the game. Pedri and De Jong occupy the central spaces, where De Jong uses his carrying ability to move the ball forward and Pedri uses his passing range to find teammates. Fermín operates in the hole as an attacking ten to link the midfield to the front three. On the flanks, Cancelo plays as a wide midfielder to provide width, while Koundé occupies the right side to help manage the transition between defense and attack.

In the final third, Barcelona utilizes three attackers to pin the last defender. Olmo plays as a lone striker who looks to find the feet of his teammates and play one-two combinations to break the line. Yamal operates on the right as an inverted winger who likes to cut inside to create chances, while Gordon stays wide on the left to stretch the defense. This front line is designed to create space for the midfielders to arrive late into the box.

This formation offers several tactical advantages, particularly numerical superiority in the central areas of the pitch. By having Pedri, De Jong, and Fermín close together, they can quickly recycle possession and protect the ball under pressure. The wide presence of Cancelo and Koundé also allows Barcelona to create overloads on the flanks, making it difficult for the opposition to defend the wings and the middle at the same time.
