Barcelona aims to control matches through heavy verticality and high pressure in a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup is built to stretch the opposition and overwhelm them in the final third by committing many bodies forward. The intention is to win the ball high up the pitch and quickly target the space behind the opposing defensive line.

Garcia starts between the posts to manage the defensive line. The back four operates with a high line to keep the team compact. Kounde plays as a right back who can stay deeper to protect against counters, while Cancelo acts as an attacking full back to provide width. In the center, Cubarsi acts as a ball playing defender to start the build up, while Gerard provides cover and remains ready to intercept passes.

The midfield functions with a two man pairing to link the defense to the attack. Pedri uses his exceptional passing range to find teammates in tight spaces, acting as the primary creator from deep. Bernal plays alongside him to shield the defense and recycle possession. This duo must work hard to cover the gaps left by the advanced players, often dropping into the half spaces to help the back four when the team loses the ball.

The attacking unit is extremely aggressive with four players pushing high. Lamine operates on the right as an inverted winger who cuts inside to create goal scoring chances, while Gordon stays wide on the left to spread the defense. In the center, Olmo and Alvarez work as a forward partnership. Olmo can drop into the hole to link play, whereas Alvarez acts as a pressing centre forward to harass the opposition defenders. This quartet looks to exploit any space left by the retreating back line.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages through its ability to create wide overloads when Cancelo and Gordon occupy the left flank. Barcelona can also use the pace of Lamine and Alvarez to hit in behind on the transition. The sheer number of attackers makes it very difficult for opponents to defend against multiple runs into the box simultaneously.

This 4-2-4 lineup focuses on high intensity and direct attacking play. It is most effective when playing against opponents that struggle to handle high pressing or teams that play a very high defensive line.
