P4 and P5 sit in the middle to shield the defense and win the second ball, while P1 plays as an attacking ten behind the strikers. P4 and P5 work to recycle possession and move the ball from deep, whereas P1 looks to operate in the pockets of space to find the forwards. This three man midfield can shift to press in a mid block or drop to help the defense stay organized.

Auxerre employs two forwards in a partnership to lead the line. P2 and P3 work together to hold up the ball and pin the last defender, creating room for the midfielders to join the attack. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball and try to disrupt the opposition build up. When the team wins the ball, P7 and P10 push high to offer width, allowing P2 and P3 to look for runs in behind or receive layoffs in the box.
