Hull Football Formation
Starting Lineup
JACK (BUTLAND) · LEWIE (COYLE) · JOHN (EGAN) · SEMI (AJAYI) · MATT (TARGETT) · REGAN (SLATER) · DARKO (GYABI) · KIERAN (DOWELL) · DAVID (AKINTOLA) · ABU (KAMARA) · ENIS (DESTAN)Hull focuses on playing a vertical style of football with a high press to win the ball back high up the pitch. This 4-3-3 formation is built to transition quickly from defense to attack. By using a high line, Hull aims to squeeze the space between the lines and force the opposition into mistakes.
JACK stays between the posts to organize the back line. The defensive unit operates as a flat back four, with MATT and LEWIE acting as full backs to provide width during build up. In the center, JOHN and SEMI hold the line and defend zonally to keep the team compact. SEMI and JOHN must stay alert to cover if the full backs push high, ensuring the defense does not get caught out during a transition.
The midfield features a three-man midfield with a carrier and creative presence. DARKO and REGAN operate in the central areas to control the tempo and recycle possession. DARKO helps to shield the defense and win the second ball, while REGAN works to connect the defensive and attacking lines. KIERAN plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to find pockets of space and arrive late into the box to support the attack.
The attacking front line uses three attackers across the front to stretch the defense. ABU and DAVID act as wide wingers who hug the touchline to create width, while ABU often looks to cut inside to link up with the central players. ENIS acts as the lone striker, tasked to find the feet of the striker and hold up the ball to allow the midfielders to join the play. This attacking trio works to press the opposition back line, forcing long balls that the defensive unit can intercept.
One major advantage of this lineup is the ability to press high in coordinated waves to win possession in dangerous areas. The presence of KIERAN in the hole provides numerical superiority in the final third, allowing Hull to create overloads against a back four. Additionally, the movement of ABU and DAVID can isolate wide players in one on one situations, creating chances through quick combinations.
Hull relies on a high tempo and aggressive pressing to dictate the game. This 4-3-3 is best suited for facing opponents that struggle to play out from the back under pressure.
