Hull aims to control the game through high intensity and verticality using a 3-5-2 formation. The lineup is designed to squeeze the space in the middle of the pitch and use quick transitions to catch opponents out of position. This system focuses on winning the ball back high up the pitch and spreading wide when in possession to stretch the defence.
The defensive unit starts with 1 between the posts. A back three provides the foundation with 5 acting as the central defender to hold the line and organize the unit. To his left, 6 operates as the left centre-back while 4 plays as the right centre-back. When defending, this trio stays compact to defend zonally. The wide players, 3 and 2, act as wing backs who must cover the entire flank, tracking back to help the back three and then pushing up to provide width in the attacking phase.
The midfield is a dense block intended to dominate the central areas. 7 and 8 operate as a double pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession. They work to win the second ball and provide a platform for the creative players. In front of them, 10 plays as an attacking ten behind the two strikers, looking to find the feet of the forwards or arrive late into the box. The wide midfielders 3 and 2 join the central unit to create a five man line that can shift from a mid block into an aggressive press.
Hull uses two forwards in a partnership to lead the attack. 9 and 11 operate as the two strikers, looking to make runs in behind the opposition defensive line. They often combine in tight spaces to pull defenders out of position. While 11 works as a pressing centre-forward to trigger a press from the front, 9 can drop slightly to link up play with 10. The goal is to use the width provided by 3 and 2 to deliver crosses or cut it back for the runners coming from deep.
This formation offers several tactical advantages for Hull. The presence of a double pivot with 7 and 8 allows for numerical superiority in the centre of the pitch, making it difficult for opponents to play through the lines. Additionally, the wing backs 3 and 2 create wide overloads that force the opposition to defend against extra men on the flanks. The ability to squeeze the space between the lines also makes this a very difficult unit to play against in a mid block.
The 3-5-2 formation creates a compact and aggressive team capable of controlling the central channels. It is best suited for games against teams that play with a single pivot or those that struggle to defend against rapid transitions.
