Barcelona aims to dominate through high possession and intense pressure using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup focuses on controlling the middle of the pitch and using wide players to stretch the opposition. Joan Garcia acts as the lone goalkeeper behind a very high defensive line. Pau Cubarsi and Gerrard Martin serve as the two central defenders, acting as ball playing defenders who must play out from the back. Because there are only two players in the back line, they must step up to squeeze the space and set the offside trap while being ready to cover large areas if the opposition hits in behind on the transition.

The midfield is a dense five man unit designed to control the tempo. Kounde plays as a single pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Rodri operates in the RCM role to control the game with his passing range and ability to hold the ball under pressure. Cancelo acts as a left sided midfielder who can push wide to provide width, while Pedri and Fermin occupy the half spaces as the LAM and RAM. Pedri uses his vision to play through the lines, while Fermin acts to press aggressively to win the ball back high up the pitch.

The attack features three players across the front to pin the last defender. Alvarez works as a pressing centre forward to lead the line and find the feet of the striker. Raphinha and Yamal act as wide wingers who hug the touchline to create width. Raphinha cuts inside to threaten the goal, while Yamal looks to isolate a one on one wide. This front three works to press the opposition back line and create chances through quick combinations.

One major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in midfield which allows Barcelona to dominate the center. Another strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the front three and the attacking midfielders to force a long ball from the opponent. This setup also allows for wide overloads when Cancelo pushes forward to join the wingers.

This 2-5-3 formation is built for aggressive, ball dominant football. It is best suited for games where the team wants to suffocate an opponent in their own half and control every phase of play.
