Starting Lineup

Lens aims to play a vertical and direct style of football using a 4-4-2. This formation focuses on winning the ball and moving it forward quickly to catch the opposition out of position. The lineup is built to maintain distance between the lines while staying compact during defensive phases.

Palacios acts as the last line of defense in goal. The defensive unit operates as a flat back four with Romero at right back and Garcilazo at left back. Both full backs are tasked with tracking back to cover wide areas when the team loses possession. In the middle of the defense, Ponce and Gomez play as central defenders. Ponce is tasked with being dominant in the air during set pieces, while Gomez works to cover the space behind the high line. This back four works together to defend zonally and maintain a consistent line.

The midfield is organized as a four man block that can shift into a more attacking variety. Silgueira sits in the center to shield the defense and recycle possession. Next to him, Gomez and Almiron operate as two central midfielders who look to win the second ball and carry the ball forward. Acosta plays as an attacking ten in the hole behind the strikers to link the midfield and the attack. This midfield group works to squeeze the space between the lines and press in a mid-block to force a long ball from the opponent.

Lens utilizes two forwards in a partnership to lead the attack. Ponzoni plays as the left striker, looking to find the feet of the striker and play with his back to goal. Bastida plays as the right striker, often looking to run in behind the defensive line. When attacking, the team relies on the movement of Acosta to provide passing options between the lines. The wingers or wide midfielders are expected to support the full backs to create wide overloads. The forwards press from the front to trigger a press and prevent the opposition from playing out from the back.

One major strength of this Lens lineup is the ability to press in coordinated waves through the midfield and forward lines. The closeness of the two strikers to the attacking midfield allows for quick combinations in tight spaces. Another advantage is the speed of transition, as the team can switch play rapidly from one side to the other to find an isolated wide player. This allows the team to hit in behind on the transition with great effect.

This 4-4-2 formation relies on a high work rate to win the ball back and strike quickly. It is best suited for games against teams that play a high line and leave space behind their defenders.
