Hull aims to dominate through a direct and vertical style of play with a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to strike quickly on the transition and use width to stretch the opposition. The team looks to win the ball and immediately find the forwards to exploit spaces behind the defense.

Tzolakis operates between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back five consists of a central trio featuring Herrington, Hughes, and Mendy, while Giles and Norton-Cuffy act as attacking wing backs. Herrington holds the line centrally, while Hughes and Mendy provide cover and step up to engage attackers. The wing backs, Giles and Norton-Cuffy, are tasked with providing width and overlapping the attackers to create crossing opportunities. The entire defensive block remains compact to prevent through balls.

The midfield works as a double pivot consisting of Slater and Iroegbunam. These two players must work tirelessly to shield the defense and win the second ball in the middle of the pitch. Iroegbunam drives forward with the ball to carry it into the half spaces, while Slater connects the defensive and attacking lines by recycling possession. They must be ready to press in a mid-block to prevent the opponent from playing through the lines. This duo is vital for maintaining control when the team sits deep.

In the attacking third, Hull employs three attackers to pin the last defender. McBurnie acts as a pressing centre-forward to lead the line and find the feet of the striker in hold up play. Thomas operates as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside and create chances, while Cho stays wide on the right to stretch the defense. The movement of Thomas and Cho creates space for Giles and Norton-Cuffy to arrive late into the box or deliver early crosses. This front three focuses on quick combinations to break the line.

One major strength of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads from the attacking wing backs. By pushing Giles and Norton-Cuffy high, Hull forces the opposition to defend more territory. Another advantage is the compactness when defending in a low block, making it very difficult for opponents to find gaps. The speed of transition allows Hull to go direct and catch teams out of position.

This 5-2-3 formation provides a solid base for teams that want to defend deep and hit on the break. It is best suited for games against high pressing opponents where space can be found behind their defensive line.
