Hull Football Formation
Starting Lineup
JACK (BUTLAND) · JOHN (EGAN) · PADDY (McNAIR) · CHARLIE (HUGHES) · LEWIE (COYLE) · MATT (TARGETT) · LUCAS (GOURNA-DOUATH) · CHRISTOS (MOUZAKITIS) · MOHAMED-ALI (CHO) · SORBA (THOMAS) · ILYAS (ANSAH)Hull focuses on a high press and rapid transitions using a 3-4-3 formation. This lineup is built to squeeze the pitch and win the ball back high up the pitch to catch the opposition before they can settle. By using three attackers and two wide midfielders, the team aims to stretch the defence and create chances through constant movement and verticality.
Jack stays between the posts to manage the defensive unit. The back line consists of a back three with Charlie acting as the left centre-back, John as the right centre-back, and Paddy in the middle. These defenders play a high line to keep the team compact. Charlie and John act as wide centre-backs to cover the space when the wide midfielders push up, while Paddy stays central to win the header and clear the lines. The unit works to maintain a narrow defensive block when the opposition does find space.
The midfield functions as a four man unit with a central pairing and wide players. Lucas and Christos operate in the middle to control the tempo and connect the defence to the attack. Lucas works to press aggressively to win the ball high, while Christos helps to recycle possession and shield the defence. On the flanks, Matt and Lewie act as wide midfielders who provide the width for Hull. Matt and Lewie are tasked to track back when out of possession and carry the ball forward to support the wingers during the transition.
In the final third, Hull utilizes three attackers to pin the last defender. Ilyas plays as the lone striker and focuses on his role as a pressing centre-forward to force a long ball from the opposition. Sorba and Mohamed-Ali act as wide wingers who hug the touchline to spread the play. Sorba and Mohamed-Ali look to cut inside to create numbers in the box or provide service for Ilyas. This attacking trio works to hit in behind on the transition to exploit gaps left by a high defensive line.
This formation offers significant tactical advantages through its ability to press high in coordinated waves. By having Lucas, Christos, and the front three all trigger a press, the team can win the ball in dangerous areas. The presence of Matt and Lewie allows for wide overloads when they overlap the winger, creating much better crossing opportunities. The coordination between the back three and the midfield ensures the team stays compact when they drop into a low block to defend.
Hull relies on a heavy pressing game and high intensity to dominate games. This lineup is best suited for facing teams that struggle to play out from the back and prefer a slower build up.
