The midfield is a dense block of five players designed to dominate the center of the pitch. De Jong sits in a central role to connect the defence and attack, often dropping between the centre backs to receive. D.Alves and Alaba work as central midfielders to win the second ball and provide stability. Modrič operates in the left half space to find pockets of space, while Messi occupies the right half space to create from deep. This five man unit allows Barcelona to recycle possession quickly and move the ball through the thirds.

The attack uses three forwards to pin the last defender and stretch the opposition. Ronaldo leads the line as a pressing centre forward who looks to find the feet of the striker and arrive late into the box. Kvaratskhelia and Salah act as wide wingers who hug the touchline to pull the opposition wide. This movement creates space in the middle for Messi and Modrič to operate. The team looks to attack in combinations, using the wide presence of Salah and Kvaratskhelia to create cutbacks from the byline.

A major tactical advantage for Barcelona is the numerical superiority in midfield which allows them to control the tempo of the game. The heavy presence of Modrič and Messi in the half spaces makes it difficult for opponents to mark them without leaving gaps elsewhere.
