Barcelona focuses on high pressing and rapid ball recovery using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to suffocate opponents in their own half and use quick transitions to exploit gaps. By using a heavy front line, Barcelona aims to win the ball back high up the pitch to keep the opposition pinned deep.

Joan Garcia stays between the posts to command his area. The back line operates as a back five, with Rodri sitting central to anchor the unit. Cubarsi acts as a ball playing defender on the right, while Schlotterbeck/Bastoni provides cover on the left. Both Pedro Porro and Hall act as attacking wing backs, pushing high to provide width and stretch the defence. This system relies on the central trio to hold the line and cover the space left behind when the wing backs push forward.

The midfield relies on a two man pairing to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Pedri and De Jong work in the center to control the tempo and recycle possession. De Jong carries the ball forward to break the line, while Pedri searches for ways to play through the lines. They must press in a mid-block when the front three do not win the ball immediately, ensuring they compress the midfield to prevent the opponent from playing out from the back.

A heavy attacking presence is maintained with three attackers across the front. Raphinha leads the line as a pressing centre-forward to force long balls from the opposition. Gordon and Yamal operate as wide wingers, with Yamal often looking to cut inside to create space for Pedro Porro. This front three works to pin the last defender and create runs in behind. The team attacks in combinations to isolate wide players in one on one situations.

This formation offers significant advantages through wide overloads when the wing backs overlap the winger. Barcelona also benefits from the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it difficult for opponents to build play. The compactness when defending in a low block makes it very hard for teams to find space between the lines.

Barcelona uses this setup to dominate possession and squeeze the space in the opponent half. This formation is best suited for games where the team needs to break down a deep defensive block through wide play.
