Lech relies on a high press and quick transitions within a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup is built to sit in a mid-block when the opponent has the ball and then hit in behind on the transition. The goal is to squeeze the space between the lines and use the extra defenders to secure the middle of the pitch.
In goal, 76 acts as the last line of defense. The defensive unit employs a back five that can shift between a narrow block and a wider coverage depending on where the ball is. The central trio consisting of 79, 78, and 76 provides strength in the air and covers the central lanes. To provide width, 76 and 78 operate as attacking wing backs who push high up the pitch to support the attack. This allows the central defenders to sweep behind a high line and intercept long balls while the wing backs track back to defend against crosses.
The midfield operates as a three man midfield with a carrier to bridge the gaps. 77 sits as a single pivot to shield the defense and protect the center backs. On either side, 78 and 77 work to connect the defensive and attacking lines. The LCM and RCM are tasked to press aggressively to win the ball high and win the second ball in the middle of the park. They must also be ready to carry the ball forward to find the front two once possession is regained.
Lech utilizes two forwards in a partnership to stretch the opposition back line. The LS and RS work in close combinations to move the defenders out of position. One striker often acts as a pressing centre-forward to trigger the press from the front, while the other looks to find space to receive on the half-turn. This formation creates runs in behind and allows the wing backs to overlap the winger, creating wide overloads. The attackers must hold up the ball to allow the midfielders to join the break.
This formation offers great compactness when defending and makes it hard for opponents to play through the lines. The ability to create wide overloads from overlapping wing backs provides a way to bypass the midfield. Lech can also use the speed of transition to catch teams out when they commit too many players forward.
The 5-3-2 formation is a solid choice for teams looking to be defensively secure while remaining lethal on the break. It is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession but struggle with quick counter attacks.
